Trade Training Opportunities
YDOT is proud to facilitate a range of five-week training courses that introduce young people to trades-based skills. Our experienced tutors help students to improve their abilities, learn more about the industry, and explore new career pathways. Students gain hands-on practical experience, as well as the confidence that comes from acquiring new skills.
Helping Young People Develop their Skills and Explore Opportunities
YDOT’s part-time trades training courses are designed to help young people develop new skills and explore their career options. From welding to automotive repair, we offer a range of hands-on learning experiences that can lead to further training or employment.
All of our courses are taught by qualified tutors in fully equipped workshops. Most of our students are between 13 and 19 years old, but we’re always happy to hear from interested students outside that age bracket – just give us a call to see if your preferred course will be suitable.
Learn to Weld
In this course, students gain practical experience while fabricating and welding in an engineering workshop. It’s great for students who are interested in welding but not sure whether it’s the right career choice, as well as students who want to expand on their existing skills.
Students will finish the course better prepared for a welding apprenticeship, with a good understanding of the industry and available opportunities.
Next Welding Course starts 31st of August for 5 weeks. 3 days a week Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 3.30pm – 5pm. Course cost: $90
In this course, students will learn carpentry skills, gain confidence using power tools and machinery, and work together as a group to build a tiny house. The Carpentry course is great preparation for a building apprenticeship, and we can support promising students to find further learning or employment opportunities.
Next Carpentry course starts 31st of August for 5 weeks. 3 days a week Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 1pm – 3pm. Course cost: $90
Learn Automotive Repair & Maintenance
In this course, students will learn basic vehicle repair and maintenance and how to troubleshoot car problems. This is a hands-on course and quite exciting for any budding mechanics! Students may have the opportunity to work on a project car, or may be able to work on their own cars or motorbikes.
The next Automotive Course dates are yet to be confirmed; please register your interest, and we will contact you once we have a confirmed date.
In this course, students will learn proper gym and workout techniques while improving their fitness in a fun group setting. This course may suit young people who are playing sport and wish to improve their fitness levels; students who want to gain a better understanding of the various types of gym equipment and how to use these; and students who wish to improve their general health and fitness. This course is a great confidence booster for all students, regardless of their current fitness level.
The next Circuit Training dates are yet to be confirmed; please register your interest, and we will contact you once we have a confirmed date.

YDOT a Charitable Trust since 1999 was set up to support Youth and since then has provided many Life and Survival Skills, Education and Training Programs.
In the first 15 years this included a successful Trade Training course which saw many young people gaining industry qualifications and going on to employment.
Now after a change of location, new buildings and with a new vision YDOT is again looking to re-establish further Skills Training and Pathway Planning programs for Youth.
The four colours of our logo represent the four areas of wellbeing from the Te Whare Tapa Whā model. Our aim in all that we do is to provide opportunities for young people to grow holistically and develop in all aspects of their life.
